MATERIALS NEEDED
â¢Story to share
RATIONALE: Sharing stories during morning meetings is a great way to settle students in. It provides the opportunity for students to enjoy stories in a familiar environment. This will help build a love of reading in students.
PROCEDURE
â¢Let students know you will be sharing a story this morning.
â¢Tell students the topic of the story or what the story is about.
â¢Set a purpose for the reading by asking students to think of questions they have as you are reading.
â¢Share the story.
â¢Ask students if they have any questions about the story.
â¢As students share their questions, respond as appropriate.
â¢Finish the activity by asking students to share with a partner what they enjoyed most about the story.
â¢Call on volunteers to share what they enjoyed most.
â¢Ask students to share some stories that they like to read or have read to them.
â¢Close by discussing how important it is to read for enjoyment.
MODIFICATIONS: If students need help with coming up with questions, provide this scaffold.
TIPS: Picking the right stories to share for morning story is very important. Take into account social skills, concepts, or seasons and holidays that will interest students. Remember the focus on the morning story is reading for enjoyment. Pick books that will accomplish this goal.
